Alexei Korzukhin
(1835–1894)

Alexei Korzukhin was born in Yekaterinburg on March, 23rd, 1835. With 1858 on 1863 he studied in St. Petersburg in the Academy of arts; in 1860 he has won a small gold medal for his painting The Drunken father of family.

In 1864 he participated in formation of the Petersburg’s Artel of Artists ("revolt of fourteen"). For a painting Commemoration on a rural cemetery (1865) Korzukhin has received a rank of the artist of the 1st degree, for Returning of the father of family from fair – a rank of the academician. In 1870 he became a member-founder of the Companies of peredvizhniks (See also The wanderers).

Among characteristic works by Korzukhin are Commemoration on a rural cemetery (1865), The Bird's enemies (1887), By hunk of bread (1890); all works are exhibited at Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. The glory to the artist was brought with his paintings Before a confession (1876-1877, 1st variant is in Picture-gallery of Tver, 2nd - in Tretiakov gallery, Moscow) and In monastic hotel (1879–1882, Tretiakov gallery).

In 1891 he has concluded The Lord's Supper for a cathedral in Riga.

The subtle psychological portraits by Korzukhin: Alexander's III portrait (1884, Russian Museum), A girl braiding her hair (1883, Russian Museum), Portrait of the retired soldier (1883, Russian Museum), Portrait of the daughter - Anna Korzukhina-Ver (1883, private collection), Portrait of Alexei Vysheslavtsev (1880) – are generally accepted as masterpieces of Russian portrait painting.

Alexei Korzukhin has died in St. Petersburg on October, 30th 1894.
